DHL to assist Sri Lankan Government in disaster management

-

Posted on: Monday, October 13, 2008 ; 05:38 IST
DHL, leading international express, transport, courier and air freight service provider, will assist the Sri Lankan Government in supporting disaster relief measures through specified services by the DHL Disaster Response Team (DRT).

A Memorandum of Understanding to this effect was signed by DHL with the Sri Lankan government’s Ministry of Ports and Aviation recently.

The DHL Disaster Response Team (DRT) is an initiative under DHL’s Corporate Social Responsibility umbrella to provide a logistics Disaster Response capability, based on its expertise in Airport Logistics Management, to support National Governments in disaster relief efforts.

DHL has set up Disaster Response Teams, comprising staff volunteers who are experts in the areas of goods handling, warehouse management, inventory and customs, at three centres --- Singapore, Dubai and Miami --- to cover regions which are mostly impacted by natural disasters. In the event of a major disaster the DRT is deployed to assist in airport ground handling of humanitarian relief cargo arriving on charter cargo flights.

During the period following the 2004 Tsunami disaster, the DRT team was active in relief efforts in Sri Lanka, helping with the Government and the Sarvodaya Movement, in the transportation of relief supplies such as purified water and dry rations to affected areas.
