Air India to set up two mainframe MROs with Boeing, Airbus aid

India’s national carrier Air India, plans to set up two mainframe MROs (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) in India, in association with global aircraft manufacturing giants Boeing and Airbus Industrie.

The airline is already in discussion with Boeing to set up an Airframe MRO in Nagpur, in central India. The venture, part of Boeing’s commitment following the deal with Air India in December 2005 for the purchase of 68 new aircraft, would meet all the requirements of customary maintenance for the Boeing aircraft of both Air India and its low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express, besides other airlines in South East Asia.

Air India is also planning an expansion in its business portfolio by building up an MRO unit for narrow body aircraft with Airbus Industrie/Indian Aero venture, besides setting up a GENX/GE90 engine repair facility in association with General Electrics to have a branded services agreement for the aircraft’s engines .

Air India has engineering facilities in Mumbai and Delhi, which carry out preventive and corrective maintenance for its aircraft to ensure their airworthiness, besides taking up a few third party jobs. Recently, these units were restructured into two MRO units for airframe and engine and components.
